Android Download

Reported by Michael DiTore | April 29th, 2010 @ 11:16 AM

Previously, one could directly download a document on their android mobile device (with the Android browser) by navigating to a document's page and clicking the download link. However, as of the recent update, clicking on the link seems to fail. The browser starts loading for a second but then stops, and continues to show the document page. The file does not download. No indications of an error, so I have no idea what causes this.

Long-click > Download Link does work, but this may not be intuitive to many users. The capability to access student government's knowledge base on the go is very valuable!

We changed the download file disposition header from attachment to inline people could view PDF documents in browser without having to download them and then opening them up.

Can you elaborate on the "Long-click" step... I don't have an Android phone.

I see... since the Android browser doesn't have an inline viewer, PDFs and Office documents are normally automatically downloaded when linked to from a website. The download list opens up, and when the download is complete the user can then click on it.

Long-click is the equivalent of right-click, except that it's used much more rarely. The user pressed down on the link for a moment, and then a menu comes up, and one of the options in the resulting menu is 'Save link'. When clicking that, the behavior is the same as with other webpages (downloads view opens, clicking on the PDF opens it). Not a dealbreaker to be sure, I just worry that it might not be obvious to the casual user.

(from [ba6e9bab0c202b4f70e8b4532bb6560e1c90b0d3]) Andriod browsers are served files as attachments instead of inline. Haris test on his phone and the behavior now works like it previously did.
