Default frontpage looks lame

The current frontpage in the system (admin/frontpage/index.php) needs serious help before it can be used publicly by anyone who doesn't override it with a custom page like we do at rpi. This page should probably be light on the JS and as simple as possible (maybe a generic form of the old one?)
